TKKM O Te Ara Hou - New School
completed 2007

This was a new Maori immersion school on a clear site. The clients wanted to express several important aspects with the new school. Firstly the concept of children coming in to the kohanaga Reo as babies and journeying around the school to leave at year 13 as young adults. Secondly a sence of community with in the school. The importance of the Whare is reflected with its prominant position in the centre of the school. We did not want the Whare to have its back to any members of the school, so it has four fronts. One for formal welcomings from the waharoa, one for the junior school, one for the middle school and one for the senior school. The whanau room also has a prominate place for entry involvement and supervision. The school has an amazing feel when you enter the centre area as does the whole school. The inclusion of the school crest crossed paddles was also important and is signified by the paddles as the cornerstone to each building.
